Uninstall PhishTank Addins for Outlook Express
Preferred Method
Uninstall the Addin via the "Add/Remove programs" box in the control panel.
If that doesn't work...
- First close Microsoft Outlook Express
- Re-install the software (to restore the necessary files)
- Immediately uninstall it again through the "Add/Remove programs" box in the control panel.
This should safely unregister the necessary DLLs and registry keys and remove the software. A system restart may be required, and software cannot be uninstalled while Outlook Express is running.
If this does not sufficiently take care of the problem, but the user does not wish to risk modifying the system registry, the user may do the following:
- Save any work, and close Microsoft Outlook Express. If asked, do not choose to archive files at this time.
- Verify that Outlook Express is not still running as a background process. Press control-alt-delete, select the processes tab, and look for "msimn.exe". If found, select it and click the "End process" button. (WARNING - Do not end the process if it is archiving messages as the messages could become corrupted)
- Stop the PhishTankOE addin by running the PhishTankOE "stop" utility from
the start menu or from inside the following folder:
c:\Program Files\PhishTank Addin OE\PhishTankStopApp.exe - Delete the installation folder:
c:\Program Files\PhishTank Addin OE - Delete the PhishTank start menu folder by right-clicking on "PhishTank OE" in the start menu and choosing "Delete"
- Restart
This will eliminate the addin, but will leave its registry keys behind. In most cases, this should not present a problem, since many applications leave behind registry keys when uninstalled. Again, a system restart may be necessary.
Manual Method (not recommended)
If the user wishes to perform a complete uninstallation of PhishTankOE, it can be done manually, however manual uninstallation is not recommended as it involves the modification of Windows Registry keys, which may result in an unstable system.
To uninstall manually:
- Save any work, and close Microsoft Outlook Express. If asked, do not choose to archive files at this time.
- Verify that Outlook Express is not still running as a background process. Press control-alt-delete, select the processes tab, and look for "msimn.exe". If found, select it and click the "End process" button. (WARNING - Do not end the process if it is archiving messages as the messages could become corrupted)
- Stop the PhishTankOE addin by running the PhishTankOE "stop" utility from
the start menu or from inside the following folder:
c:\Program Files\PhishTank Addin OE\PhishTankStopApp.exe - Unregister the following DLLs by using 'regsvr32 /u "... path ..."' at
the command line:
c:\Program Files\PhishTank Addin OE\oeapiinitcom.dll
c:\Program Files\PhishTank Addin OE\oestore.dll
c:\Program Files\PhishTank Addin OE\oecom.dll - Delete the following registry string values (DO NOT MODIFY ANY OTHER
REGISTRY KEYS OR VALUES):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
PhishTank OE
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
PhishTank OE - Delete the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\PhishTank - Delete the installation folder:
c:\Program Files\PhishTank Addin OE - Delete the PhishTank start menu folder by right-clicking on "PhishTank OE" in the start menu and choosing "Delete"
- Restart
